All hands on deck: Sailing team seeks new shipmates

Sailing club prepares to shore off this fall

For thirty dollars and the ability to swim, Loyola students can learn the art of sailing and compete in regattas.

“Any student can join the sailing team regardless of experience. The vast majority of people who join have had little to no experience. I had only been on a sailboat once before I joined the sailing team,” said Victoria Calder, vice commodore and philosophy junior.

Calder said that the only requirements to join the sailing club are regularly attending practices at the Southern Yacht Club on Lake Pontchartrain, knowing how to swim and paying a $30 club fee every semester, which goes toward travel expenses.

Due to expenses, the club will not be participating in the Jesuit Cup this October, an event that in the past they have participated in. However, Calder and Jennifer Keller, commodore and international business senior, said they are planning new events.

“We have some really excellent sailors joining the team this year, as well as experienced returning members, so we are going to be participating in more single-handed racing events. We also plan on getting more involved in Southern Yacht Club races, such as their twilight racing series and their large boat races,” Calder said.
