Among the plethora of challenges currently facing the city in the wake of Hurricane Katrina, the most pressing is the need to repair and upgrade the levee system. The most tragic effects of Hurricane Katrina were caused not by the actual storm, but rather by the very human failures of the levees and floodwalls protecting New Orleans. In order for New Orleans to truly recover, people will need to believe in the effectiveness of the levee system. No one will invest their money or lives in New Orleans if it remains vulnerable to flooding. Therefore, our organization, Save the Big Easy Organization, is calling on Congress to appropriate funds to strengthen the levees and floodwalls protecting the city to a point where they will be able to withstand Category 5 hurricanes. We need widespread public support for this effort, and with your position, you have the ability to reach a lot of people very quickly. The success of our effort depends on how many people we can reach.
