October is breast cancer awareness month. Everyone, from the NFL to Loyola University of New Orleans and Facebook, is supporting the cause.

If you have checked your Facebook recently, you probably noticed many Loyola student women’s status’s saying where they like it, but you might have thought they were referring to something inappropriate.

They, however, were referring to where they like to put their purses.

This movement was done to increase awareness that October is breast cancer awareness month.

This was a continuation of a similar event that happened on Facebook in October 2009 that made headlines; females posted the color of the bra they were wearing that moment as their status.

The Women’s Resource Center, Residential Life, Athletics and Wellness, and Student Health formed “Team Loyola” for the American Cancer Society’s Making Strides against breast cancer walk at City Park on Sunday, Oct. 10.

The money raised will benefit the New Orleans community that is affected by breast cancer.

“This activity is a great way for Loyola University to support the New Orleans community and promote awareness about women’s health issues,” said Karen Reichard director of the Women’s Resource Center.

Pink is the official color for breast cancer awareness. Loyola students will be able to join the pink fad with the help of SGA.

“SGA will be handing out pink pins and breast cancer fact every Tuesday this month to help support the cause,” said Kate Gremillion, SGA president and communication junior.

The Women’s Initiative Organization will be hosting a bake sale; the proceeds will go to the St. Thomas organization that offers free mammograms. Early detection of breast cancer is crucial in beating this deadly disease. WIO is also bringing a speaker to Loyola’s campus.

“I think it is truly wonderful how actively our community is participating in breast cancer awareness month,” Gremillion said.
