For all those who can never get enough Mardi Gras revelry, rejoice. The New Orleans City Council issued a new parade permit to the Krewe of Nyx for the 2012 Mardi Gras season, the first new permit issued in over a decade, according to Sandra Simpson, krewe co-captain.
Julie Lea, founder and captain of the krewe, said one of the krewe’s goals was to bring revenue into the city. She said they were committed to the city and supporting the local economy. The krewe consists of 450 members, many from out of town. Out-of-town members and their families were planning on coming to New Orleans a week in advance of the parade, Lea said.
Lea came up with the idea to start a new parade on Mardi Gras day in 2011. She had always wanted to ride in an all-female krewe like the Krewe of Muses, but it had a waiting list of over 1,000 women. The solution? Start her own parade.
“We knew the market was there,” she said.
The parade will roll the Wednesday before Mardi Gras, on Feb. 15, 2012, after the Krewe of Ancient Druids on the Uptown route. According to the krewe’s website, Nyx is the goddess of the night. The krewe is no longer accepting new members and already has a waiting list.
Jolie Bonck, a member of Nyx, said she got what she wished for.
“I always thought it would be fun to ride in a women’s group like Muses, but that was locked up. It was on my bucket list to ride in a parade again in my life. I was at lunch with a girlfriend who told me about joining Nyx, and I immediately jumped on board,” Bonck said.
Bonck convinced other friends to join as well, and said she is excited to make hand-decorated throws for the parade.
Charlene Bussat, public relations junior, says that a new parade “gives an opportunity for people to be in a parade that don’t normally have that chance.”
“Every parade involves using transportation like streetcars and cabs, and people buy drinks, so parades help business and spur the economy,” Bussat said.
