Dussen Matta sees Doom in near future

Dussen Matta (3-2) will take on Legion of Doom (2-2) in a battle for the top spot in the gold division of the intramural basketball league.

Dussen Matta center and graphic design sophomore Christopher Knibbs is confident in his team’s ability and has no doubt that they will claim the top spot in the division after their matchup with Legion of Doom. “I know that Legion of Doom has a couple of key players who I have played with before, but if my team plays to its full potential there is no way they, or any other team for that matter, can beat us this season,” Knibbs said.

Knibbs, who is the team’s leading scorer with 33 total points and rebounder with 29 total rebounds, stresses to his teammates the importance of rebounding in order to win a championship. “We pride ourselves on our rebounding. We do not worry about the points. Those will come,” Knibbs said.

Dussen Matta must find a way to penetrate Legion of Doom’s 2-3 zone and man-to-man high pressure defense in order to score. “Our offense is pretty basic. If you play a zone, we will shoot your eyes out. If you play man, we will kill you in the post or off the dribble,” Knibbs said.

Similar to Dussen Matta, Legion of Doom is confident in their ability to defeat any team in the league. “We know that when we play together we can beat any team in our league,” said Jared Williams, Loyola law school student and guard.

Despite this confidence, Williams believes that his team must “gel” in order to reach the level of play that they desire. “A team that plays together and is as athletic as we are is very difficult to beat. However, a team that has chemistry issues and does not put the team first is beaten before they get on the court. We are very beatable when we do not play together; however, I feel us starting to gel,” Williams said.

Legion of Doom’s offense runs through law school professor Robert Weber, who Williams characterizes as the team’s “go-to guy.” “He can create his own shot and is lethal from the three,” Williams said.

Legion of Doom will have to “find out [their] identity, find what rotations work, and what group of guys play well together” in order to beat Dussen Matta said Williams.
