Dear Editor,
(RE: Oct. 26 “The Buc opened in Loyola’s Field House in 1967”) I really enjoyed your feature article about the New Orleans Buccaneers. It was a trip down memory lane, but I was a bit disappointed that there was no mention of the colorful history of the Field House, in addition to hosting the Buccaneers.
As the proud parent of your photo editor, I can’t help but frequently reminisce and remark about the structure that once occupied the site that the Recreation Complex now commands, and the memories contained therein.
In New Orleans of the 1960s and ’70s, the Loyola Field House on Freret Street was a prime venue for big-name pop concerts and entertainment. One need only to watch a few minutes of the Time-Life infomercial for their “Flower Power CD Collection” to get a gist of the many performers who graced the stage of The Field House. I, for one, vividly remember first row seats at a Simon and Garfunkel concert, among many other memorable events.
I would truly appreciate reading more about the history of the Field House “way back when.” Surely, many other baby-boomer Loyola parents and alumni would also be interested in this historical aspect of the university and might contribute personal stories and photos if invited. Perhaps a series of short articles by year? Please, give us more about the Loyola Field House.
Sincerely,
Pru Kaufman
