From stabbings to plays to fraternity brawls, there’s been no shortage of controversial news during the past two semesters. The editorial board scanned The Maroon archives and picked some favorite quotes:
* “Most of the girls had cups in their hands. Even if the cup was empty, they got busted.” – Allie Weed, business management freshman, on Tuck’s being raided.
* “For a moment, I really thought he was going to kill himself. It was unexpected, and he didn’t seem like that kind of guy before.” – Harold Kuntz, communications sophomore, on Thomas Dodd Newton’s holding a knife to his own throat in class.
* “We don’t talk about death, and one of the things I think this case did was give people permission to have those conversations.” – The Rev. Kevin Wildes, S.J., university president, on Terri Schiavo.
* “When we go to SGA meetings, we begin with a creed that says we will represent our constituents to the best of our ability. When I take that creed, I take it to heart.” – SGA Vice President Scott Daugherty, psychology junior, on his commitment to SGA.
* “Fredreaka always was a little bit strange. She was always laughing at nothing and walking around naked.” – M’lyn Usie, music business sophomore, on roommate Fredreaka Jack’s erratic behavior.
* “Backwards man thong.”- Ryan Cabrera, pop singer, on the type of undergarment he wears.
* “I would be unfaithful to my charges as archbishop if I did not state publicly that ‘The Vagina Monologues’ is offensive to sound Catholic teaching.” – Archbishop Alfred Hughes, on why he denounced the Rev. Kevin Wildes’ decision to allow the production of the play.
* “When we signed up, we were anticipating that we would be in an apartment. I expected to have my own room. The process isn’t fair. I have been waking up to drilling at eight in the morning – Monday through Friday. That wasn’t in my contract.” – Jeff Barker, marketing management senior, on his disappointment with the construction on Carrollton Hall.
* “I have promised to be open and honest in my decisions. One of my responsibilities as president is for how we steward our resources. Space and money are two very important resources for Loyola. I think that making the room available, through normal scheduling procedures, and redirecting the subsidy is a better use of our resources for the whole community.” – The Rev. Kevin Wildes, S.J., on his decision to close down the Senior Commons Room.
* “We’re going to train our students to be leaders and not just workers, and we’re going to train them to think with an entrepreneurial mindset. The three bywords of the program will be leadership, ethics and entrepreneurships.” – John Synder, director of music business, on his academic plan for music business students.
* “We were going to do what it took to make it. They were not going to look past us. We were going to make it.” – sociology senior and point guard Joelle Bordelon, on the Loyola women’s basketball team’s determination to make the NAIA national tournament.
