Faulty hood sets off Danna Center alarm
Shortly after 10 a.m. on Monday, the Danna Center fire alarm went off, causing the building to close for about 10 to 15 minutes during peak foot traffic time.
Physical Plant discovered the origin of the problem to be a faulty hood, or ventilation system, in the Orleans Room kitchen. Smoke and heat generated from charbroiling sausage collected in the hood system with smoke and heat from cleaning a nearby flat top grill, said Vance Howe, director of Dining Services.
The Danna Center alarm system is a thermal heat sensor, Howe said, so the accumulation was a combination of heat and vapors from cooking and cleaning. Physical Plant has fixed the faulty hood motor and checked other hoods, he said.
“We hope that we never have another problem like that,” Howe said.
Loyola student’s ‘Jeopardy’ run ends
Kevin Marshall, classical studies junior, finished his seven-day run on Jeopardy Wednesday night. Marshall’s total winnings were $105,701. Jeopardy host Alex Trebek told Marshall that he could be appearing in the Tournament of Champions in the near future.
Marshall, a native of Metairie, found out in October that he would be appearing as a contestant while attending College of the Holy Cross in Massachusetts for the semester, according to a news release on Loyola’s Web site. He took the qualifying test in February 2005.
Next week’s issue of The Maroon will include a feature story on Marshall and his Jeopardy experience.
