Dear Editor,
The United States must continue to apply pressure against Iran’s nuclear ambitions. Unlike Saddam’s Iraq, its eastern theocratic neighbor does not hesitate to use terrorism as a foreign policy tool: from the 1983 Beirut Marine barracks bombings to the 1996 truck bombings of Khobar Towers to, as many experts believe, indirectly abetting the insurgency in Iraq today.
In concert with the U.K, France, China and Russia, the United States is right to have Iran referred to the Security Council. A coordinated international pressure to check Iran’s blatant violations of international nuclear agreements is likely to produce results especially since this time China and Russia are active international actors (this was not the case in 2003). A nuclear armed Iran is a threat to international order and American security. Iran must be deterred.
Sincerely,
