Loyola’s top players honored

Loyola University and the Wolfpack will honor four people at this year’s Loyola Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony.

This event honors Loyola alumni who make history or contribute greatly to their sport. Those featured in the Hall of Fame include Olympic record setters, coaches of national championship teams, school record holders, and athletes and coaches who present an image of Loyola’s excellence.

The Hall of Fame was established in 1964. The program disbanded in 1972, but it returned when the intercollegiate athletic program was re-instated in 1991.

The 2012 inductees are Clark Shaughnessy A’32; Jerry Brady, A’62; David Lindsey, A’00; and Stephanie Legleu, A’02. In addition, Derby Gisclair, A’73, will be honored with the St. Sebastian Award for his impressive efforts on behalf of Loyola athletes off the field.

Clark Shaughnessy, Loyola football coach from 1926 to 1932, was head football coach with a six-year record of 38-19-5. During these years, he designed and implemented offensive plays. Also known as “father of the T-formation” for modernizing the T-formation to be relevant in football again.

Jerry Brady, who played baseball from 1959 to 1962 as a starting second baseman, was considered one of the best defensive players of his era for all four years of his career and one of the nation’s best infielders.

David Lindsey, who was catcher and relief pitcher for the baseball team from 1997 to 2000, was a four-year letter winner for the Wolfpack and one of the most decorated players for baseball.

Stephanie Legleu was a track athlete from 1999 to 2002 and holds Loyola’s records in the 1500 meter, the 3000 meter and the 5000 meter. She was named Academic All-American during her senior year.

The criteria for selection include sportsmanship, character and integrity. According to Kellie Kennedy, head women’s basketball coach and member of Loyola’s Hall of Fame Committee, the alumni of a Loyola athletic team are nominated to be inducted into the Hall of Fame. Once nominated, ballots that include nominees’ achievements are created, and the Hall of Fame committee votes on who will be inducted.

“There are not a certain number of inductees every year,” Kennedy said. “(We) just have to see how everyone votes.”

The 2012 Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony will take place Saturday, Jan. 28 in the St. Charles Room in the Danna Center. All students are welcomed to this event.
