Although The Maroon took a hiatus during the summer, thieves – both successful and unsuccessful – and the occasional transvestite did not. To compensate for the time, here are five of the top stories between May and August.
Two men wearing ski masks broke into a business on the 7600 block of Maple St. Both men were brandishing guns on the street which includes several late-night college bars.
Three people were robbed at gunpoint in the parking lot of the popular upperclassman bar The Palms on June 22. The thief approached them with a handgun demanding money. After the three revelers complied, the thief fled.
On May 30, a man pretending to be helpful stole from two homes on the 7000 block of Willow St. The man, who was missing several teeth, first approached a man asking to clean his porch for money. When the man declined, the supposed Samaritan entered the house through the unlocked back door and stole several items from a roommate’s bedroom.Continuing down the street, a woman saw the same man open the back door of her home and look inside. After seeing the woman, he asked if he could clean her back yard. When she declined the man left for a neighbor’s back yard. When the man noticed that she was still watching him, he fled down Willow St.
During the renovations of the Danna Center, two Apple computers were stolen from the Center for Intercultural Understanding office on Aug. 6. Due to the extensive renovations of the Danna Center, police first thought the computers were misplaced. Since neither iMac was recovered, theft is assumed. The office, which is on the first floor of the Danna Center, has glass doors and walls and is in plain sight of anyone walking through the entrance of the building.
At 4 a.m. on May 11, while most were asleep, a man dressed as a woman certainly wanted it his way when he crawled through the drive-up window at a Burger King at 2423 S. Carrollton Ave. and stole money from the cash register. Before the man left through the window, employees opening the store noticed that the man had abandoned the traditional ski mask and black hoodie for a red wig, floral print dress and a pink necklace.Contact info:from University Police reports
