The Maroon provides a guide of fun places for newcomers to the Big Easy to go on a Friday night along with the fashion do’s and dont’s at each location
The Republic 828 South Peters St. New Orleans, LA 70130 (504) 528-8282
Miss those days full of Molly Ringwald, Members Only and Global Guts? Well, come on over to the Republic on Friday nights to indulge in the nostalgia.
Every Friday night this club features a “Throwback” series where club goers 18 and over can enjoy, at least for one night, all the ’80s and ’90s music you can kick up your pumps to and throw back your fedora at.
So far, the club has featured a Nickelodeon Throwback complete with slime shots (for those of legal drinking age, of course) and games to compete to win a piece of the Aggro Crag from “Global Guts.”
They hosted an ’80s Prom Night Throwback that featured iconic movies like “The Breakfast Club” and “Pretty in Pink,” along with free prom pictures.
Tonight, it’s Animal House Back-to-School Throwback that will feature “Animal House” and “Revenge of the Nerds” on the big screen and another photo booth for “yearbook photos” and “student IDs.”
It’s encouraged that club goers dress festively to the night’s theme (for instance, today, wear a school uniform or varsity jacket). But if you’re not in a festive mood, ladies, dress to impress with an informal, black, slender cotton dress and some heels. And for the fellas, please dress appropriately to complement the ladies with a collared shirt and nice, hole-free jeans.
And to both sexes, never ever leave the house without your hater-blockers on.
The Frat House Uptown 8200 Willow St. New Orleans, LA 70118 (504) 861-4141
Summer vacation is over, but the party has just begun. Accessible by streetcar, the Frat House Uptown is the new Friday night hangout.
Booming hip-hop music, pool tables and an overactive dance floor puts the Frat House on the map. Frequent patrons, referred to as “Frat Rats,” might suggest visiting the concealed patio bar outside to beat the drink lines and seating limitations inside.
“Growing Up Gotti” fashioned guys with stiff collared button-up shirts and even more stiff spiked hair along with undersized, tunic-wearing, false-eyelash-batting, hair-extension-flipping glamour girls. The overall dress, however, is casual. Sundresses paired with wedges for girls and guys garbed in frayed jeans coupled with polo shirts and fresh kicks are the norm.
Cover is five dollars excluding special events and concerts, and you must be 18 to enter.

Friar Tuck’s5130 Freret StNew Orleans, LA 70115(504) 891-4080
Ok, so maybe you’ve visited this bar a million times. Obviously, it’s doing something right to keep luring you back.
Friday nights at Friar Tuck’s may not have any elaborate theme except 2-for-1 drinks (once again, for those who are of legal drinking age) but it still has a DJ that plays booty-shaking anthems, a pool table, well, to play pool, food to coat your stomach so you don’t die of alcohol poisoning (third warning- if you’re old enough to consume such things) and it’s literally down the street from the school you’ll call home for the next year.
Sure Tuck’s has all the basic things that almost every bar anywhere has, but it also has an added something to be aware of – club muck!
Guess all that bumping and grinding on the dance floor is a breeding place for all that mud dragged from outside to slosh around and accumulate throughout the night.
So, everyone, do yourselves a favor: do not wear jeans in any circumstance unless you don’t mind cutting off the bottoms and wearing high waters the next week at school.
Ladies, a nice denim skirt matched with a fitted top will do, and fellas, some khaki shorts along with a polo looks great for these fun, late drunken nights (ahem, for the last time, if you’re legal.).
