Commencement speaker announced
Cathie Black, president of Hearst Magazines, will give the commencement address to Loyola’s graduating class in May.
“She is a publisher and journalist, one of the founders of USA Today and, given our programs, that seemed appropriate,” the Rev. Kevin Wildes, S.J., university president, said.
Black oversees the production of many magazines, including Cosmopolitan, Esquire, Good Housekeeping, Harper’s Bazaar, Marie Claire, O, The Oprah Magazine, Popular Mechanics, Redbook and Town & Country – 19 magazines in all. Her recently published book “Basic Black: The Essential Guide for Getting Ahead at Work and in Life,” has become increasingly popular.
Wildes said he takes suggestions from students and faculty and checks availability with agents of potential speakers before inviting someone.
“We have some mutual ties and one of them knew she was interested, so I touched base and it went from there,” Wildes said.

Sex presentation cancelled
A speaker from Planned Parenthood scheduled to speak at Loyola on Feb. 18 was cancelled and relocated to Tulane. According to a Planned Parenthood press release, speaker and health educator Meghan Greeley was slated to give a presentation called “Safer Sex in the City.” When asked why the speaker was cancelled, the University Programming Board, who was going to sponsor the event in conjunction with Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., declined to comment.
“We are not too sure why, but we had to choose a new location for the workshop,” said Julie Mikelberry, Planned Parenthood’s Director of Public Relations.
The presentation provides information about birth control, abstinence and reproductive anatomy.
“It’s important for college students to have this information so that they can make responsible and healthy decisions. This event provided a fun opportunity to empower Loyola students to do just that,” Greely said.
