The Loyola Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies and Proyecto Luis de Lión will be hosting a competition to translate a Spanish short story into English.
The project is in memory of Luis de Lión, a professor, author and activist in Guatemala. It is also dedicated to the educational and cultural development of children in Guatemala.
Contestants must translate the short story “Su Segunda Muerte,” written by Lión and must also write an essay. Two faculty members in the Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies and two New Orleans Review editors will judge the contestants’ work.
The competition is open to all students. Winners will receive $200 and have their translation published in the New Orleans Review Fall 2014 print edition.
Contestants must register by April 6 by emailing Nathan Henne, Loyola Spanish professor.
Proyecto Luis de Lión will also host a fundraiser at the Prytania Bar. Proceeds will benefit the Community Art Academy, the Luis de Lión Library and the House Museum of San Juan del Obispo.
The bands Fake Carls, Exotic Pets, Beware of Bear and Paper Bison will perform at the event.
The cover charge is $5 and the event will be hosted on April 10 at 9 p.m.
