Women’s team takes down Martin Methodist to earn 14th straight
January 10, 2015
The beat goes on for the women’s basketball team. On January 9, they took down Martin Methodist University in a gritty matchup on their home floor to notch their 14th straight victory on the season. The Pack was fueled on offense by Janecia Neely and Megan Whitaker with 17 points a piece, but it was the contributions from the other members of the Pack that also helped to secure the win. Junior Shayne Charles helped lift the team with a solid performance off the bench, tallying 12 points and four rebounds.
“What motivated me the most was my teammates and my coach. Coach gave us a motivating speech before the game and my teammates were behind me. It’s not me. My teammates are the reason I did as well as I did,” Charles said.
Charles has been battling a knee injury for much of the season and was finally able to return to form tonight against the Martin Methodist Redhawks. Senior Rebekah Greer also had an impact on the game down the stretch, as she forced three crucial turnovers in the second half en route to the Pack sealing the game in the final minutes.
“They’re a very good team. We’ve been practicing really hard but this has been a total team effort. The confidence that we have is truly amazing. Even when we’re down, we know that we will be able to come back. We did what we needed to win,” Greer said.
Even with the solid all-around play from the team and a 14-0 record on the year, Head Coach Kellie Kennedy has made it a point to remind the team they are still learning.
“We’ve talked about winning, losing and being perfect. We can’t be afraid to lose, and there is a possibility that we could lose. Anything can happen. But we’re playing to win and as long as we can maintain our mental aspect on that we will continue to be successful,” Kennedy said.
The women’s team will put their undefeated record to the test on the road against Bethel University next Thursday, January 15.
