Men’s team falls to Martin Methodist

Loyola men’s basketball team’s valiant effort comes up short against No. 7 ranked team.

The Loyola men’s basketball team experiences what is a temporary setback. Coming into Friday night’s matchup against Martin Methodist University, the team was riding the momentum of a six game winning streak. The win streak came to an end, as the Pack fell to the Martin Methodist Redhawks in the Den 63-75.

Senior McCall Tomeny scored 27 points and grabbed 12 rebounds to lead the Wolf Pack on offense. Coming into this game, Tomeny knew the challenges that his team would face taking on this team.

“We had a tough game. We knew that we had to take care of the ball, we knew they loved to create turnovers. We felt like that’s where we let them get us tonight. They got out in transition and got some easy baskets,” Tomeny said.

The Pack had 25 turnovers as a team in the loss on Friday night. For Head Coach Stacy Hollowell, this is the part of the game that his team has to clean up if they want to get back on track.

“This is the most turnovers we’ve had all year. We’ve got to continue to get better. We’ve gotta play with toughness, we’ve gotta play with confidence and we’ve gotta take care of the ball,” Hollowell said.

The one positive that Coach Stacy did drew from the loss is the play of freshman Ben Fields, who was the only other player in double figures with 11 points and 5-6 shooting from the free throw line. With a series of conference games coming up for the Pack, it’s all about growing up as a player for Fields.

“Being a freshman, I’ve gotta grow up quick. Coach sat me down and told me that I’ve gotta stop playing like a freshman. With Conference games coming up we’ve gotta prepare our minds, cause every game is going to be a tough one,” Fields said.

The Pack will face Conference opponent Bethel University on the road on Thursday, January 15.
