As a college student, many find it important to be on the lookout for little ways to save money in order to deal with the price tag of tuition and books. With the streetcar line under construction, here are a few restaurants surrounding campus where a college student can find a quick bite to eat without having to empty his or her wallet.
SATSUMA CAFÃ

This cafe is known for its fresh ingredients and health-conscious menu. Satsuma Café is a place for students to grab a quick breakfast or lunch. The café boasts outside seating and free Wi-Fi.
“I love going there to do my homework because I can sit outside, order a cup of coffee and enjoy a homemade pastry,” Lauren Jontiff, mass communication junior, said.
THE COMPANY BURGER
4600 Freret St.
In the heart of the “New Freret” neighborhood, The Company Burger is known for its succulent burgers, its buttermilk battered onion rings and its tater tots. The burgers are made with antibiotic-free and hormone-free meat, and the burger joint’s condiment bar boasts house-made flavored mayonnaises and house-made pickles.
LIBERTY CHEESESTEAKS
5031 Freret St.
This locally owned and operated cheesesteak restaurant uses fresh-cut sirloin steak and bread sourced straight from Philadelphia for its sandwiches. The menu offers a variety of cheesesteaks with sauces and sides to choose from.
“I stumbled across this place because it’s where the old Dat Dog used to be,” Elizabeth Clayton, business senior, said. “I’d definitely go back for the boil fries. They were amazing.”
LA MADELEINE
601 S. Carrollton Ave.
A country French bakery and café, La Madeleine is known for its authentic pastries, tomato basil soup and quiches. Customers can choose to sit inside its dining room or outside overlooking the streetcar line. Complimentary bread and marmalade are available at this breakfast, lunch and dinner restaurant.
