WEBTo celebrate Earth Day, several organizations are working together to create the first annual Earth Day Carnival on campus.

The carnival will be held in the Peace Quad on April 22 from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. and will offer free food, games and reusable water bottles while promoting sustainability. The Loyola Association of Students for Sustainability, the Environmental Department of Loyola and Green Light New Orleans organized the event.

Annabeth Madden, psychology freshman and honorary member of LASS, said the carnival will focus on advocating and educating the student body.

“The Earth Day carnival will be a fun atmosphere where we can advocate and educate students about recycling and what they can do to make a difference,” Madden said.

As a means to introduce sustainable resources to students, Madden said the carnival will feature Green Light New Orleans, an organization that installs eco-friendly light bulbs and backyard vegetable gardens for free.

“The core of our work is that a small action has tremendous impact when repeated again and again,” said Andreas Hoffmann, executive director and founder of Green Light New Orleans.

Green Light will present their efficient light bulbs and vegetable garden programs at the event, have information about bottle reduction and lowering your carbon footprint and present details about internship opportunities with the company.

Hoffmann said he is keen on connecting with Loyola students as their company offers people a “neat way” to give back to the community.

Representatives from the environmental department, LASS and the Think Outside the Bottle Campaign will also be at the event.

Cierra Guerin, business freshman, said she plans to attend the event.

“There isn’t enough focus on sustainability in today’s society,” Guerin said.

Guerin said she wants to see an increased focus on recycling and sustainability on campus and said she thinks the carnival will help raise awareness.

Focusing on the fun and educational purpose of Earth Day, LASS has arranged an open panel of environmental science department professors to speak about sustainability movements after the carnival. The panel will have additional entertainment and free desserts for those attending.
