Study abroad students respond to Belgium terror attacks

Brussels airport has reopened after suicide bombers destroyed its departure hall and killed 32 people, and injured hundreds more.

The ISIS terror attacks in Belgium have even affected New Orleans students who plan on going to Brussels this summer.

“I’m flying into that airport that was bombed. And when I get to that airport it’s still probably going to be under construction from the terror attacks that happened,” says junior Lester Duhe.

Lester is one of the seventeen students that will be going to Belgium this July from Loyola’s study abroad program.

“You know it’s really hard to hear there was a terror attack in the country you’re going to study abroad in, so that was pretty scary,” he says.

In light of the recent attacks, many students share a similar concern, and for Loyola they say they’re keeping an eye on the situation in Belgium.

Dr. David Moore has gone abroad through Loyola’s program seven times as a program leader, and he is this year’s guide for the Belgium trip. He says that the Center for International Education will be the school’s guidance on safety precautions.

“We don’t know what the situation will be, it will be impossible for us to predict what were going to do. We will stay closely in touch with events in Belgium from now until departure date,” says Dr. Moore.

Still, things could change if the situation becomes more extreme.

“Obviously if the situation becomes more dire, we would cancel,” said Dr. Moore.

But for Lester, not going would be letting ISIS win.

“I’m not going to let the hate out of one organization stop me from having an awesome time in Belgium and studying abroad,” says Duhe. “So, I’m not going to live my life out of fear and I’m not going to let them scare me, because that’s what they want. ISIS wants me to be scared. “

As of now, Loyola students will still be going to Belgium this summer, and for Loyola, they say they are keeping a close eye on safety as the trip approaches.
