Loyola loses steam in 5-OT defeat
February 15, 2019
When the top teams in the nation clash, the games are memorable, and when No. 13 Bethel University visited the No. 25 women’s team, the game lasted through five overtimes and spanned three hours before the Royals defeated the Wolf Pack 106-100.
The game was back and forth throughout. The fourth quarter alone saw four ties, with the teams heading into extra minutes at 73 points each.
Both teams only managed two points, sending the game into a second overtime. With Bethel gaining some momentum, a pair of free throws with 1.8 remaining set the score at an even 80 and the game into a third overtime. Both teams would trade three-pointers but no one could get over the hump, sending the game into another overtime period.
Bethel and Loyola each scored seven points in the fourth overtime, but the Royals would go on to score 13 points in the final overtime, giving them the win on Loyola’s Homecoming night.
International business junior Kaila Anthony scored a team-high 27 points as well as blocking three shots and grabbing three steals.
Psychology senior Megan Worry scored 25 points and grabbed 13 rebounds, marking her fourth double-double in the past six games. She also added three steals and three blocks, marking 55 blocks on the year.
With the loss, Loyola saw their 10-game win streak snap.
The team now has a 21-6 record and a 15-3 record.
They will play again on Feb. 16 against Blue Mountain College for Loyola’s Senior Day.
