Midnight Mass

“The Haunting of Bly Manor” creator and director Mike Flanagan is back on Netflix with his latest supernatural horror series. “Midnight Mass” focuses on the arrival of a mysterious priest (Hamish Linklater) in a small community, and the supernatural events that follow.

Foundation

Apple presents a sci-fi series adaptation of Isaac Asimov’s groundbreaking book series. Produced by David S. Goyer, “Foundation” features a group of exiles who race against time to save the Galactic Empire from imminent destruction. The series stars Jared Harris as protagonist Hari Seldon, as well as Lee Pace, Lou Llobell, and Leah Harvey.

The Starling

Melissa McCarthy stars in the latest comedy drama from Netflix. She plays a grieving woman who deals with an intrusive bird in her home. The film also stars Chris O’Dowd, Kevin Kline, Timothy Olyphant, Daveed Diggs, and Laura Harrier.

The Perfect Candidate

The 2019 Saudi Arabian drama film is directed by Haifaa al-Mansour. “The Perfect Candidate” follows a young female Saudi doctor who runs for office in the local city elections. The film competed at the 2019 Venice Film Festival and was later selected as the Saudi Arabian entry at this year’s Academy Awards.

“The Perfect Candidate” premieres Sept. 29 at The Criterion Channel.

La Brea

What if a giant sinkhole opened up in the middle of Los Angeles? The premise of NBC’s new series is certainly interesting, as it features a separated family trying to get back together in a mysterious primeval world under the sinkhole.

“La Brea” premieres Sept. 28 on NBC. It is available for streaming the next day on Hulu.

Minor Premise

The American sci-fi thriller stars “Twin Peaks” alum Dana Ashbrook, his niece Paton Ashbrook, and Sathya Sridharan. It centers on a reclusive neuroscientist (Sridharan) as he pits ten fragments of his consciousness against each other in a volatile experiment.

“Minor Premise” premieres Sept. 29 on Hulu.

New Order

Michel Franco directs the Mexican-French art film thriller. Set in a dystopian near-future, a nationwide working class uprising disrupts an upper-class couple’s wedding in Mexico City. The film won the Silver Lion Grand Jury Award at the 2020 Venice Film Festival.

“New Order” premieres Sept. 30 on Hulu.
