Loyola’s Department of Athletics and Wellness is offering two new ways to get fit this spring with Workout 101 and the Class Pass.
Workout 101 is based off of the P90X program. P90X is a 90 day home workout routine that emphasizes muscle confusion. The idea behind muscle confusion is that by switching up the nature of the workout, a person will never plateau on the number of calories burned during a repetitive exercise.
Workout 101 will include upper and lower body training, along with cardio, martial arts and yoga. The program uses the same structure as P90X, but with 11 added classes, bringing the total number of class days to 101. Just like its name, the program is $101 and open to all students, faculty, staff and Sports Complex members. Workout 101 will run until Wednesday, April 27. No classes are held during school holidays.
Another offering from Loyola Wellness this semester is the $89 Class Pass. For less than $90, the pass grants the buyer unlimited visits to the following classes until May 4: Yoga Meets Dance, Turbokick, Zumba, Disco Sculpt, Ashtanga Yoga, Yoga Nidra, and Iyengar Yoga. Each class is taught at a different day or time, so no class times intersect. Class Pass members have the opportunity to attend a total of 196 classes, costing about 45 cents per class.
The Class Pass came about after Associate Director of Wellness, Kristi Salvaggio, kept hearing complaints from students who paid for a specific class but were unable to attend some of the classes due to scheduling conflicts, and felt that they were wasting money.
Workout 101 and the Class Pass are also a way to streamline the old pricing system of individual classes. In the past, the price for a class was determined by the status of the person taking it (student, faculty, staff or member) and how long that person intended on taking the class.
The class pass solves these issues with a set price for everyone. It also presents the opportunity for people to attend a group of classes that once needed to be paid for individually, and lasts until the end of the semester. Both Workout 101 and the Class Pass are priced low to be a value whether bought at the beginning or the middle of the semester and both can be purchased together for $150. Loyola Athletics and Wellness also offers free programs including Aerobic Fitness, Bootcamp, Step, Martial Arts, Water Workout, and Yogalet to those with a valid Sports Complex ID and membership. Class schedules are available in the Sports Complex. Those looking to register for Workout 101 or the Class Pass should visit the University Sports Complex.
