The Wolfpack women’s soccer team debuted in the Union University tournament in Jackson, Tenn., last weekend with a resounding 7-1 victory against Crichton College. The seven goal mark was the second largest effort by the ‘Pack since a 10-0 defeat over Agnes Scott College in 1995.
Heather Whitfield, international business sophomore, delivered a hat trick, scoring in the 25th, 40th, and 42nd minutes.
“The three goals I scored felt fantastic,” Whitfield said. “I really felt like our team deserved the 7-1 victory over Crichton. We were working so hard and everything just fell in sync. I am really proud to have been able to score three goals for my team. They deserved it.”
Political science junior Marina Meza opened the barrage of scoring four minutes into the match and then went on to deliver an assist to Sallie Smith, political science junior, in the 7th minute. Brenna Kane, political science freshman, also delivered a double, scoring two goals in the 24th and 30th minutes.
Head coach David Poggi, in a press release, applauded his team’s performance. “The first half was important for us as we created a lot of chances by being quick to the ball. It was something that we had stressed this week in practice and we were able to capitalize on those chances.”
In the second game, the host Union Lady Bulldogs didn’t hospitably welcome their guests, defeating the Wolfpack 2-1. Kane scored the only goal for the ‘Pack in the 71st minute, doing so unassisted.
Two scores in the first half proved to be the difference maker. The Lady Bulldogs scored in the 31st minute and the 53rd minute and never looked back.
International business freshman Jordann Webster had an impressive showing in goals, saving 23 shots to keep the Wolfpack within range.
Poggi remained positive during the weekend’s games and said games like that will only help going into conference.
“It was a good lesson for us especially as we get closer to GCAC matches,” Poggi said. “We showed a much better side of us as a team in the second half, and Brenna’s goal was a just reward. We can take several positives from our play this weekend.”
The Wolfpack is scheduled to play Mobile today and Southern on Sunday at Tulane’s Westfeldt Facility.
