I have personally always enjoyed reading The Maroon. It was one way to keep up with on- campus news and events. However, lately I had begun to notice that several on-campus events were being overlooked. I had not thought much of it until this ignorance and journalistic laziness directly affected me and my organization.
On Saturday Jan. 26, 2013, Team X-Pro hosted a major event that had never been done before in the entirety of Loyola’s history. This event was a massive video game tournament featuring 45 students from four different universities including Loyola. The turnout just to watch was astounding. Considering nothing of this nature had ever before been undertaken by the university or its organizations, it would appear that this was a newsworthy event, but it never appeared in The Maroon.
I tried to contact The Maroon about this event immediately after its conclusion because no one had contacted me about it, but I never received a response. When I was finally able to get a friend who works in the School of Mass Comm to talk to a friend at The Maroon, he was told the story was “too old now.” I take numerous issues with this.
Firstly, if The Maroon is actually a newspaper, then it is their job to seek out and find on-campus news to report. I should not have to hand it to them on a silver platter with flashing neon lights only to have it entirely ignored. Furthermore, if the job of The Maroon is to report on-campus news, then they are failing miserably at their job by not reporting this event and several others that have been overlooked. This not only tarnishes the name and reputation of The Maroon, but it also does the student body a major disservice by The Maroon not doing its job to keep them informed about on-campus news and events.
Frankly, I had come to expect much more of The Maroon and I would highly advise them to pay closer attention to on-campus events that organizations put on. These organizations put a lot of time and effort into making these events happen and it is frustrating when they are told, “Oh, sorry, it’s too old even though you tried to give it to us weeks ago.” Kindly remember your job and do it properly in the future.
Sincerely,
Michael Cain
