Throughout my time here at Loyola, I have been fortunate enough to have a variety of different experiences, but one of the best opportunities I have received is the chance to work with the Student Government Association.
During my freshman year, I began as an SGA intern and eventually moved to the then-executive staff position of director of student identity, working with Mission and Ministry to enhance student understanding of our Jesuit traditions.
This past year, I had the privilege of serving as chief of staff, ensuring that the executive branch operates as smoothly as possible in order to serve students. These experiences motivated me to continue my work with SGA and run for the position of president.
As president of SGA, my top priority will be to secure accurate representation and communication on behalf of the students. Too frequently have student body presidents become voices of the administration to the students; I want to be the voice of the students to the administration.
As the student representative on the University Planning Team and University Budget Committee, I want to ensure that student concerns will always be in the forefront of all discussions related to the Master Plan and common curriculum.
In my two years of working with SGA, I have gained the trust and confidence of various members of the administration, which will allow me to continue improving the student experience at Loyola.
The only way these improvements will happen is if students are included in the process as much as possible. Currently, the most active way students are involved in SGA is the budget allocations process. This process needs to be simplified to ensure that students have access to as much funding for their organizations as possible. I want to improve the process with the help of organization leaders to make sure it is understood by every organization.
SGA also needs to improve students’ understanding of discussions taking place with the administration. Through a weekly blog consisting of topics concerning the student body, I will make certain that the students are as informed as possible, and will help them share any thoughts they have with the SGA and the administration.
This week, I look forward to speaking to the students of Loyola about their concerns because student concerns are my concerns..
