Bob Payne, political science sophomore, has been elected the Student Government Association vice president for the 2006-07 school year.
Outgoing SGA President Michelle Clarke, communications senior, announced the results of the run-off Wednesday evening in the Danna Center.
Jake Parvino, international business sophomore, was elected representative for the College of Business. He ran against international business freshman Josh Aranguiz, international business and finance freshman Carlos Macias and international business and marketing freshman Angela Richter.
Payne ran against psychology junior Lee Daugherty.
Payne said extravagant promotions may have played a major part in his election, but it’s his dedication to hard work that Payne wants to emphasize.
“The promoting shows people that you really care. I know it’s hard to show everybody what you want to do, but even if they don’t know, whatever it is you do, you’re going to work really hard at it,” he said.
Payne said that aside from his intense self-promotion, which included rainbow-chalking many walking spaces on campus and putting up various signs, he also made an effort to talk to about 15 of Loyola’s student organizations.
His plans for office involve getting the students and university to get more involved in the city of New Orleans. Payne also wants to discourage the frivolous use of SGA funds, including throwing unorganized parties.
“I want to make the day-to-day life better on campus for students,” he said.
New SGA President Daniel Green, political science junior, who won his election last week, is thrilled to have Payne on his team.
“Bob is hardworking, collaborative, and his platform is very close to mine,” Green said.
Green and Payne have already discussed some of their goals in working together for SGA. Their biggest job is to challenge the administration when making decisions based on “bottom line” ultimatums. Green also wishes to bring back the holistic approach of the Jesuits and to listen and deal with students’ concerns around campus.
According to Chris Cameron, director of Student Activities and SGA adviser, Wednesday night’s elections for SGA vice president and College of Business representative yielded an 18 percent voter turnout.
