After winning its inaugural game at Segnette Field last Friday, the Loyola baseball team dropped the series to Belhaven by losing both ends of a doubleheader on Saturday.
After giving up a run in the first inning of the rubber match, Tory Western, biology sophomore, settled down, pitching seven consecutive shutout innings. Western gave up seven hits and struck out three.
But the Wolfpack (2-4, 1-2 GCAC) only managed one run against Blazer starter Brad Fultz in eight innings. David Lauricella, biology freshmen, drove in communications senior Ryan Moity on a single in the third inning.
Psychology sophomore Gian Balsamo (0-1) recorded two outs, a hit, and a walk before allowing the game-winning hit in the ninth.
Management senior Scott Schenck (1-2) took the loss in the first game of the doubleheader. He gave up seven hits and four runs in six innings.
Brian Sullivan, communications freshmen, went two-for-two with an RBI to lead the ‘Pack on offense. Loyola could not take advantage of three Belhaven errors and only posted six hits in the seven inning game.
Despite the series loss, the Wolfpack christened Segnette Field with a victory over Belhaven, 7-4. Communications senior Brad Showalter (1-0) allowed four runs on six innings and halted a Blazer rally in the ninth to get the victory.
Schenck belted the first Wolpack homer of the year to lead off the seventh inning. He finished two-for-three with a RBI and four runs scored. Lauricella and Paul Williams, economics senior, each had three hits and Lauricella drove in two runs.
Loyola begins a three-game series with the University of Mobile today at 2 p.m. in Mobile, Ala.
