“Oh the weather outside is frightful…” This is the song that comes to my head every time I go outside in brisk weather. It’s unavoidable. It may not even be close to Christmas, but there it is — ringing in my head — anytime it drops below 65 degrees.
This is probably because I have an unusual obsession with Christmas. I just love that time. The music, the weather, the decorations, the lights — I’m a sucker for anything that twinkles and glitters and it probably explains why I have Christmas lights in my room year round.
Also, in the beginning of the year it was a struggle to delete all the Christmas songs from my iPod — but I finally did because apparently not everyone appreciates when “Jingle Bell Rock” blasts when you drive around in June. But as it actually gets closer to Christmas, my usual Christmas spirit is off its game. Does anyone else feel this year went by too fast?
Honestly, I am beyond thrilled that this semester is almost over and I’m pretty excited to go home — but it was just Thanksgiving … and I remember last Christmas like it was yesterday. Where did the time go?
I feel like an old grandmother asking this question but its true. Maybe it is just a consequence of getting older or something, but as our lives are run by all the stuff we have to do, everything turns into a deadline we have to meet — even Christmas. December 25. That’s our deadline.
However, I think the reason why Christmas is so appealing is because it really is a season. “Tis the season to be jolly.” The parties, the shopping, the things you do to prepare for Christmas make it a process and not so much a one-day event. But is it just me or have we all been too busy to even notice that it’s already December?
Well, in all fairness it is only the beginning of December and though it pains me to say it, now is truly the appropriate time for the season to begin. So, don’t forget (between papers and finals) to squeeze in a holiday movie or party with your friends before heading home.
As we speak, I’m getting my Christmas game face on. I changed my phone’s ring tone to “Carol of the Bells” (which is not the theme from “The Godfather” — a common mistake). I’m bringing back the Christmas carols and I’m neglecting homework to watch “Elf”— though I don’t think you should take that advice.
Did you know “Elf” is the most rented holiday movie from Netflix? So as Buddy would say, “the best way to spread Christmas cheer is singing loud for all to hear.”
Thus, let the spreading begin.
