Some say it’s a classic rock band, others say it’s a traditional country band. The moment you listen to Reckless Kelly’s latest album, “Wicked Twisted Road,” you will accept the fact that the band is categorized as alternative country/rock. Deemed “alternative” country, Reckless Kelly is not your typical country band.
There is much proof of this status in its 13-track album, which includes a myriad of instruments like the fiddle, drums and the acoustic, electric and string guitars. This proof accounts for the unique musical styling.
The band is named after an Australian bank robber who was shot 28 times in captivity, so don’t let the expression “reckless” deceive you. Reckless Kelly is a live and entertaining alternative country/rock band who has been on the music scene for years. Willy and Cody Braun, the original band members, have followed family tradition into the music industry.
An impressive step up from its last album “Under the Table and Above the Sun,” Reckless Kelly’s poetic song lyrics have matured. Sugar Hill Records, the record label behind this talented band, has also produced records for well-known artists like Dolly Parton and Nickel Creek.
“Wicked Twisted Road,” the first track, sets a dismal mood. Lead singer and songwriter Willy Braun sings about the relationship with his first love going bad. “My first love was a wicked, twisted road/ I hit the million-mile mark at 17 years old.” The third track, “7 Nights in EIRE,” has an upbeat and cheerful tempo and is an enjoyable change from the melancholic mood in the first song. The Irish bagpipes played at the beginning and ending resemble the music played during the lounge scene in the Academy Award winner “Titanic.”
Other melodies like “A Lot to Ask,” “Wretched Again” and “Broken Heart” can be categorized as easy listening heard while dining at a casual restaurant.
The song “These Tears” especially showcases the band’s country/rock genre. “There’s no denying my misery/ I couldn’t hide it if I wanted to/ You want the credit but can’t you see these tears don’t fall for you.”
This album is five-star worthy from beginning to end. Reckless Kelly’s passion for music speaks volumes and shows for a promising future with Sugar Hill Records.
The album is set for release on Feb. 8. The latest CD features a board game and multi-media playable on most computers. Yesterday, the band played at the House of Blues.
In addition to countless shows and concerts, the Braun brothers are credited for performing at the Grand Ole Opry and on “The Tonight Show” twice with Johnny Carson.
Reckless Kelly fans have been linked to other groups like the Eagles and .38 Special, but its diverse edgy tones certainly echo that of originality.
