An overview of Student Affairs’ involvement in the recent Beggar and Alpha Delta Gamma fraternity conflicts was the main topic of discussion at this week’s Student Government Association meeting.
A joint organizational meeting was held and both groups were instructed to stop antagonistic behavior such as spitting, blocking the sidewalk and fighting; however, those instructions were subsequently ignored. Student Affairs will allow the Student Government Judicial Court to adjudicate the charges – including policy violation and physical aggression – that will be brought against the fraternities.
Each charge will be reviewed and representatives for the fraternities will be allowed to plead in one of the following ways: culpable, not culpable or culpable with mitigating circumstances. If the fraternities are found culpable and not in keeping with their Loyola charters, the Student Government Judicial Court has the authority to revoke the charters of each fraternity. This invalidation can be for a specific period of time, usually a semester of year off campus or it can be permanent. Charter revocation means that Loyola will not recognize the group. The group is banned from representing themselves on campus and will not be able to recruit new members while on campus. The Judicial branch is expected to meet within two weeks to handle this affair in full.
