After a three-hour meeting last Tuesday, the Student Government Association approved a new election code and passed the resolution to accept it. This new code, modeled on the codes of past years, replaces a mixture of rules that had existed since 1999. The code will be used in the 2005-06 elections. It clearly delineates how the election should be run and the consequences for breaches of the policies. Communications junior Amarena Diaz, the commissioner of elections, is responsible for organizing the election and enforcing these rules. Some changes in the code include the dollar amounts candidates will be allowed to spend on their campaigns as well as limits placed on the type of support candidates can receive from organizations. The Student Government tabled a resolution censuring the university for considering implementing a rule that prohibits alcohol in the dormitories. Tabling means that at the next meeting, Congress will discuss the resolution. A resolution in support of the development of a University honor code was also tabled.
