It looks like Tiger Woods is due to have his face on a Wheaties box again after his performance at the Masters this past weekend. His sudden-death victory on Sunday made for an interesting break from channel surfing and some great golf.
Tiger and Chris DiMarco provided some suspenseful moments all weekend with their back and forth leads. Tiger seemed to have clinched the victory early with two birdies, to take a four-stroke lead over DiMarco. But DiMarco rallied back as Tiger made two bogeys.
Tiger got his jacket back though, after making a 15-foot birdie putt on the final hole to clinch the victory.
Now normally, I am always for the underdog, but Tiger needed this win. I was beginning to worry about him after he went downhill following the 2002 US Open.
He revamped his swing, took a walk down the aisle and came back ready to win his reputation back.
Tiger is without a doubt, one of the greatest competitors to ever play in the PGA. He plays smart, and he has always had mental toughness, but it really came out at the Masters this past weekend.
I still remember him swinging his arm up like a swift upper-cut after he made that shot to win the green jacket for the first time in 1997 by a record 12 shots.
One thing I have always wondered: Why a jacket? It just hangs in a closet. You can’t put a Masters jacket on display, can you? If I had one, I’d wear it to every tournament.
This year Tiger sported his red Nike polo, reminiscent of his 1997 win. If I were Tiger, I’d wear one at every major this year. I think it might be his little good luck charm. Forget the hot wife. Red is definitely Tiger’s color but not as much as the green of that Masters jacket is.
His performance at the Masters speaks for itself that he is after more than just the jacket this year.
The big buzz in the golf world is that with this Masters win, Tiger is back on track on his way to break Jack Nicklaus’ record of 18 majors.
It was a kind of bittersweet way to look at it because this was the golf legend’s last Masters. Nicklaus has suffered through a lot emotionally since the recent death of his 18-month-old grandson in a pool drowning accident. It was sad to see the legend bow out, but he left Tiger with some words of wisdom: “Only with a green jacket can a golfer win a Grand Slam.”
Look out world, Tiger’s out of hibernation, and he woke up hungry for more grand slams.
And I don’t mean the kind from Denny’s.
