Loyola students, tourists and other residents alike have a new place to enjoy beignets and coffee.
New Orleans Hamburger and Seafood Company, which replaced Cannon’s restaurant, added a coffee shop to their new location on the corner of St. Charles Avenue and Milan. The coffee shop and restaurant opened on Nov. 26, the day after Thanksgiving.”It’s in between a Starbucks and Café Du Monde,” said Paul McGoey, owner of New Orleans Hamburger and Seafood Co. and Coffee and Beignet Co.
The coffee shop offers iced coffee, frozen coffee, cookies and gelato in addition to beignets. New Orleans Coffee and Beignet Company is the only place where Uptown residents can buy beignets and coffee within their neighborhood.
“I grew up Uptown and it didn’t have anywhere to get coffee and beignets,” McGoey said. “I got tired of driving to Metairie to get some and I see this as an opportunity to have it.”
According to McGoey, the St. Charles location was chosen to add the coffee shop because it had the space for it. Orleans Parish customers of New Orleans Hamburger and Seafood Company no longer have to drive to Metairie for beignets.
“I haven’t eaten there yet or had the opportunity to have great beignets,” said mass communication junior Lee Slan. “I plan to go there because it’s a good location and I don’t want to go way to the French Quarter to get beignets.”
“I miss Cannon’s,” said Ashley Sam, a customer. “However, I’m elated that New Orleans Hamburger and Seafood added a location near my house, and added a beignet shop too.”
Sam explained her happiness of not having to drive into the French Quarter’s traffic to enjoy beignets.
According to McGoey, patrons of both Café du Monde and New Orleans Hamburger and Seafood Company can expect a smaller and cleaner environment at the new coffee shop.
“I mostly love the environment of the shop,” Sam said. “It doesn’t have the sugar from the beignets all over the seats and tables and that it is inside of a building with televisions. The shop is like a mini restaurant.”
Criminal justice senior Jamaya Johnson, she would prefer to have beignets in the French Quarter.
“The beignets in the Quarter are the best,” Johnson said.
However, other students look forward to experiencing New Orleans Coffee and Beignet Company.
New Orleans Hamburger and Seafood Company acquired the location by offering a price to the lot owners.
“We lease the building,” McGoey said. “Cannon’s was not for sale; we were interested in it and they decided to close.”
Students can take a streetcar to New Orleans Coffee and Beignet Company for quiet study time or just to go. The hours of the coffee shop are Sunday through Thursday, 6:30 a.m. to 10 p.m., and Friday through Saturday, 6:30 a.m. to 11 p.m.
