At this year’s Take Back the Night, Alpha Kappa Psi made a commitment statement against sexual harassment and stalking.
This past week, Alpha Kappa Psi is following through on its statement with Sexual Harassment Awareness Week.
“Our commitment was to help to prevent sexual harassment in the workplace and stalking,” said Sonnet Brown, Alpha Kappa Psi service chairperson.
To follow through with their commitment, the members of Alpha Kappa Psi Business Fraternity sponsored Sexual Harassment Awareness Week from April 12 to April 16.
“It seems to be received really well on campus,” Brown said.
Sexual Harassment Awareness Week has become an event that takes place on many college campuses each year as people become aware of this issue.
Sexual Harassment Awareness Week culminates tonight with a lecture by Marilyn Robinson at 7 p.m. from Tulane in Multimedia Room 2 of the Library.
Robinson will examine sexual violence on campus and in the workplace and how sexual harassment often leads to stalking.
Robinson came highly recommended by representatives from the National Organization for Women, and is involved in social work and studies violence against women.
Every day this week, members sold $1 ribbons for people to write their name on in protest of sexual harassment, assault and stalking.
As of Wednesday, they had garnered more than $40, and all proceeds will go toward Take Back the Night in October.
Alpha Kappa Psi showed two movies with workplace sexual harassment themes: “9 to 5” and “Disclosure.”
After the movies, students were free to discuss the role of sexual harassment in the movies and Hollywood’s view of sexual harassment and stalking.
Maria Medina, law professor, gave a talk on sexual harassment in the workplace on Wednesday night.
Brown hopes that Alpha Kappa Psi will continue Sexual Harassment Awareness Week as an annual event.
“Since this past Take Back the Night’s emphasis was on stalking, we thought this would be a great supplement to it so people don’t forget this issue until the next Take Back the Night,” Brown said.
