As the baseball team hit the road for Mobile, Scott Schenck, management junior, looked to defend the honors given to him on April 5.Schenck was named the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference pitcher of the week for his performances last week, which included a one-hit shutout against Talladega. He also pitched a no-hitter earlier in the season against William Carey College.According to Brett Simpson, assistant coach, Schenck could become an even better pitcher. “There are days when he can go out and dominate, but there are other days when he struggles with his control,” Simpson said. “He has been more consistent this year.”The same day Schenck received the honors, the Wolfpack opened a three-game weekend series with Mobile at Ram Field. The Rams ran over the ‘Pack in the opener, 9-4.The ‘Pack hung tough until the bottom of the sixth, when Mobile scored three runs to break open the one-run game.Tory Western, accounting junior, took the loss pitching six innings, giving up seven runs and improved his record to 4-3.The same two teams met the next day to play a doubleheader in Mobile. Unfortunately, the ‘Pack was swept out of town.Schenck started the day’s first game with hopes of repeating his performance of a week ago. He hurled for five innings, allowing four earned runs on seven hits including five free trips to first but took the loss to drop his record to 4-4.The downfall for the ‘Pack came in the third and fifth innings when the Rams scored three runs each time. The Rams’ starter, Bubba Dobson, pitched a complete game for his third win of the season.Chad Stouder, general studies senior, led the ‘Pack offensively with two hits.In the second game of the afternoon the ‘Pack’s comeback fell one run short as the Rams swept the series with a 3-2 win.The Rams took a three-run lead in the bottom of the fourth on catcher Nick Sims’ two-run home run.The ‘Pack responded in the top of the fifth, when Doug Neill, computer science senior, roped a two-run double with one out. But two runs were all the ‘Pack could push across the plate, and Mobile’s starter, Guy Thigpen, recorded the win after five strong innings on the mound.Brad Showalter, communications junior, pitched six innings in the loss, allowing two earned runs on six hits.”Showalter pitched a good game, but we just didn’t score enough runs to support him,” Simpson said. The weekend series dropped Loyola’s record to 22-20 overall, 13-8 in conference play. The ‘Pack looked to end its losing woes on Tuesday, but the skies opened up and postponed the contest against Belhaven College at Barrow Stadium. After the rainout, Loyola traveled to Baton Rouge to take on the Southern Jaguars, who defeated the ‘Pack 17-5.Southern hitters feasted on Loyola pitching. Five Jaquars recorded three hits, including Richie Weeks who drove in six runsThe ‘Pack started off quickly, leading 5-0 after the top of the second. After that inning, Loyola went hitless for the rest of the game as Southern took control.Alan Bouterie, economics junior, took the loss in relief. Neill led the ‘Pack offensive going 2 for 4 with two RBIs. The loss drops Loyola’s record to 22-21.The ‘Pack returns to play during Alumni Weekend with a doubleheader against Spring Hill at Barrow Stadium at 1 p.m on Saturday. Loyola is scheduled to complete the weekend series on Sunday. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
