For the past two-and-a-half weeks, the Loyola baseball team’s actions on the field have spoken loudly enough for all to hear. The ‘Pack has gone 11-3 in that span, including a 10-game winning streak in which it out scored its opponents 109-41. Head coach Don Moreau passed Louis “Rags” Scheuermann to become the program’s all-time winningest skipper. Infielder/catcher Brian VanHaverbeke, management senior, broke the Loyola record for most career home runs.Loyola boasted both the GCAC player of the week in Ryan Moity, communications sophomore, and GCAC pitcher of the week Brad Showalter, communications junior, for the same seven-day span. The ride didn’t start so smoothly, however. After dropping two of three to William Carey in mid-March — the lone win in the series being management junior Scott Schenck’s no-hitter — the ‘Pack came home to face Southern Arkansas. The Muleriders, who came in on a 13-game winning streak, promptly swept the two-game series.Still, said Moreau, no one was worried just yet.”We’ve played extremely well from the beginning [of the season],” he said. “But there were about seven games that we’d lost in the last inning or last at-bat.”On March 20, after the second loss to Southern Arkansas, Loyola met Alcorn State sporting a meager 11-16 record. That’s when the team decided it needed to work harder. “We just decided we weren’t going to let any more games get away from us,” Moreau said. The ‘Pack never even gave Alcorn State a chance to steal the game away, jumping out to an 8-1 lead after two innings and winning 13-3. Ryan Mahoney, general business junior, got the win, allowing three runs in seven innings. Shortstop Chad Stouder, general studies senior, led the offensive charge, going two-for-five with two runs and three RBIs.The team then headed north, where it met with rival Lousiana State University-Shreveport March 19 and 20 in a pivotal three-game series. The ‘Pack stayed true to its word. Fueled by effective pitching and timely hitting, Loyola swept the Pilots in a series that turned out to be monumental for a couple of reasons.Showalter began the series by allowing only three earned runs in a 10-5 complete-game victory. The win was Moreau’s 234th as Loyola coach, equaling Scheuermann’s career record.Record win number 235 for Moreau came less than twenty-four hours later, as Loyola squeaked out a 4-3 extra-inning victory in the first game of a double-header.The ‘Pack completed the sweep in the nightcap, trouncing LSU-S 13-8 and pushing its winning streak to four. “Everything culminated with the sweep at LSU-Shreveport,” Moreau said. “That’s where we really got our season going. We just took off from there.” Loyola came home March 26 and swept a doubleheader against Lindenwood University, out of St. Charles, Mo. VanHaverbeke led the offensive charge, joining Moreau in the Loyola record books in the process. He went a combined four-for-seven with two home runs, four runs scored and six RBIs. The two homers — his eighth and ninth on the year — gave him 19 for his career, a new Loyola record. “I didn’t even realize I tied the record until someone told me,” VanHaverbeke said. “When I hit number 19, though, I realized what I’d done. The feeling kind of hit me as I rounded second base. I don’t think I stopped smiling the whole game.”Neither did the rest of the team, as the sweep pushed the ‘Pack back over .500, with a record of 17-16.Loyola then welcomed Jackson State to Barrow Stadium with an offensive explosion. With the ‘Pack leading 21-6, the game was called on account of the ten-run rule. The ‘Pack entered the Easter weekend with a three-game stint against Talladega. The ‘Pack swept Talladega, 11-1, 9-0 and 6-1, and the contests featured what Moreau called “the deepest pitching staff I’ve ever had.”Two weeks after throwing a no-hitter, Schenck threw a one-hitter in the first game of the doubleheader on March 29, as Loyola defeated Talladega College 9-0 at Barrow Stadium. He improved his record to 4-3.The sweep gave the Wolfpack an even 10 wins in a row and a 21-16 record. The GCAC rewarded the team for its efforts, naming Moity the conference player of the week and Showalter conference pitcher of the week. “I didn’t really expect to get [the honor],” Showalter said. It was my first time to get it this season; hopefully, I’ll win it again this season.”The ‘Pack’s ten-game winning streak came to an end Tuesday as the team lost to Franklin College 5-3 at Barrow Stadium. The ‘Pack avenged the loss and tried to start a new streak Wednesday as it defeated the Franklin College Grizzlies in the second game of a two-game series. Matt Franatovich, graphic design freshman, gave up three runs on six hits and struck out two. Alan Bouterie, economics junior, got his first save of the season, pitching three innings of scoreless relief, while giving up four hits and striking out two.”We had to play extremely well tonight, and we did so,” Moreau said after Wednesday’s game. “Now we’re back on track.”And Moreau and his team have an idea where that track could lead.”We’ve got something like 18 games left,” Moreau said. “We talked before the game today, and there’s no reason why we can’t win 18 in a row now. We already won 10 in a row. That’s our mindset right now. We’re ready to play anyone.”The win leaves Loyola 22-17, winning 11 of its past 12 contests. This weekend the ‘Pack is scheduled to head to Mobile for a three-game stretch before returning home on April 9 for a game against Belhaven at Barrow Stadium.
