Scott Schenck, management junior, was named Region 13 and GCAC Pitcher of the Week on Wednesday for the no-hitter he threw at home against William Carey in game one of the GCAC doubleheader last Saturday.Schenck struck out three and walked four in seven innings to give Loyola its first no-hitter in seven seasons, when Jeff Mills A ’96 no-hit LSU-Shreveport in 1994.Schenck was quick to not take all the accolades for the feat.”I really have to give credit to my teammates, they played good defense. I hit my spots and I just let the rest fall into place.”Coach Don Moreau cited the accomplishment as another sign of Schenck’s team-leading ability. “Obviously, it was a monumental effort,” said Moreau. “I thought that we played well on Friday, but what Schenck did on Saturday, you just can’t ask for anything more than that.”The day before Schenck’s no-hitter, William Carey began the three game series with a win over the ‘Pack, scoring three runs in the top of the ninth and four in the tenth to defeat Loyola, 7-3.”Both of the pitchers were throwing good games, but someone had to let in a run,” Moity said.”Stouder did what he needed to do to get the run in. They weren’t throwing him strikes, he was patient and he knew the walk would do the job.”The ‘Pack was tied with the Crusaders 3-3 going into the top of the tenth until Darrius Brown, who went three for four for Carey, hit a solo homerun over the left field fence to put his team on top.Doug Neill, computer science senior, went two for five on the day, including a run-scoring single in the bottom of the ninth that sent the game into extra innings.Tory Western, accounting junior, almost threw a complete game for the ‘Pack, coming out for Ryan Mahoney, general business junior, who took the mound late in the eighth. Mahoney took the loss for Loyola, after walking one batter and giving up two runs on two hits including the homerun to Brown. The next day’s doubleheader began like any other, until Schenck overpowered the Crusaders in seven innings, throwing the no-hitter. Schenck said he felt pretty calm during the game, but as the top of the seventh rolled around, gravity set in.”You try not to think about it while you’re out there, but it’s hard,” Schenck said. “Everyone congratulated me after the game. We definitely celebrated afterwards.” The lone run was scored in the bottom of the sixth inning when Carey’s Ryan Jordan walked Chad Stouder, general studies senior, with the bases loaded to score Ryan Moity, communications sophomore. Moity had the only two hits for the Wolfpack. In the second game William Carey scored two runs off a single in the top of the eighth to defeat Loyola 5-3 in extra innings. Brad Showalter, communications junior, got the loss, throwing all eight innings, giving up two earned runs and striking out four at the plate.Brian VanHaverbeke, management senior, had a game at the plate going three for four with a solo homerun. The Tuesday after the three game series against Carey, the ninth-ranked NCAA Division II Southern Arkansas Muleriders swept the ‘Pack in a doubleheader at Wesley Barrow stadium. In the first game, Matt Franatovich, graphic design freshman, got the loss for Loyola, throwing 7 1/2 innings, giving up four runs on ten hits.Schenck saw pitches from the other side in the first game, leading Loyola at the plate going two for four with one run batted in. The Muleriders gave the ‘Pack some difficulty in the second game, defeating the team 11-1.Loyola’s Paul Knoth, general business sophomore, got the loss, pitching one inning and giving up five runs on three hits and walking one. This weekend the ‘Pack will be on the road, as it travels on Friday up to Shreveport to face LSUS in a three game GCAC series that will last into the weekend.
