Freshman Adam Griego and Anna Nguyen hope to end the rivalry between Tulane and Loyola students by coming together and starting a new tradition: The Freret Freshman face-off.
The slogan for the event is “Freret Freshman Face-off: F^3 don’t be a square!” Freshman from both schools will get together for a day of competition that would last from 3 p.m.-5 p.m. Griego and Nguyen are aiming for Feb. 12 because it is the week after the Super Bowl and the week before Mardi Gras. They decided this was a good time because the spring semester, unlike the fall semester, does not have a lot of opportunities for freshman to get together.
There will be groups of about 10 people. Five people from Loyola and five people from Tulane. The groups will participate in games such as dodge ball and musical chairs. A map given to each group will have numbers that correlate with certain locations and games. Once the group arrives to the location, they begin the game. Points accumulate with each game that is won and the group with the highest wins a grand prize.
A concert will be held after the competition and some potential bands are Steel Train from New Jersey and a band called My Name is John Michael. Local bands from both schools are encouraged to contact the senators to participate in the event.
Students will be charged $10-15 for the event. They will receive a T-shirt and with the t-shirt they have access to the competition, the concert, a chance to win door prizes and it will serve as a keepsake for the event. Griego and Nguyen hope to get good door prizes such as Wolfbucks and Wavebucks, Best Buy gift cards, and gift cards for local shops on Magazine Street.
“I think it works and it will bring us together as one,” said Karson Cullins, business freshman.
Loyola Freshman senators and Tulane freshman senators are in the process of meeting with Tulane and Loyola student governments about how to get funds for this event. The budget is estimated at around $20,000-$25,000. The budget is a second concern, Griego said, the first concern is getting the event to happen, but any contributions are welcome.
