Next Tuesday is fast approaching and you know what that means – new DVD releases. Well, if you want advice on what you should absolutely buy, what you should rent once and what you should stay away from, check out this guide on what’s hot and what’s not.
“Air Force One” combines two of the greatest elements that exist in modern movie making: Harrison Ford and tons of action. Ford plays President James Marshall of the United States whose plane gets hijacked by Russian terrorists. Throughout the film he battles the would-be kidnappers with classic Ford bravado, and it all comes together in a glorious finish that only a movie that takes place in an airplane can deliver. “Air Force One” may be old, but it’s still fantastic. “Bobby” is a film that chronicles the night Robert Kennedy was assassinated at the Ambassador Hotel in 1968. The film is a powerhouse of Hollywood’s greatest actors, though at times this seems to draw the film down. The story provides a snapshot of the late ’60s by drawing on multiple intertwining stories that collide in the dramatic and powerful ending. The only problem is that the script can barely keep up with the talent that is present.
Robin Williams is a funny guy; the problem is that he’s not too funny in “Man of the Year.” In a time when Jon Stewart rules cable TV, a movie about a comedian-turned news anchor being elected president would seem relevant. Instead of showing how funny it could be for a comedian to run the White House, we get to see how an election can be destroyed by one simple intern. Williams’ funny-man past has simply worn off.
