With the season heading toward a close, the women hit the road for the last weekend road trip of the season.
Last Friday afternoon, the ‘Pack fell to Spring Hill, 4-0. The Badgers out-shot the Wolfpack, 15-2.
According to Head Coach Emmy Therrell, the ‘Pack was simply beaten by a better team.
“Spring Hill played very well,” she said. “They were a better team all-around, and we couldn’t stop their forward.”
Spring Hill’s Rocio Aleman scored three goals against the Loyola defense, but Leila Manouchehri, sociology junior, recorded nine saves.
Therrell said she believes the ‘Pack’s lack of scoring was not because of lack of effort.
“We had a few chances, but Spring Hill out-played us,” she said. “I was pleased with the teamwork and the determined play. We put passes together and supported each other as a team. We just couldn’t put the ball in the net.”
On Saturday, the team traveled to Georgia to take on LaGrange University and evened their weekend at one win and one lost.
The ‘Pack held the LaGrange offensive in check and scored the only goal in the win on a quick pass and sharp shoot.
“We should have scored more,” Therrell said. “We created opportunities with passes and crosses, but we just couldn’t finish them. Not being able to finish was very frustrating.”
The only goal came off the foot of Anna Weldon, co-captain and education senior, off an assist from Lisa Handschumacher, biology junior.
Weldon took the pass and beat the last LaGrange defender. As she dribbled towards the goal, the goalkeeper came out of the box to cut off the shooting angle. Weldon calmly chipped the ball over the keeper’s head for the lone score of the game.
“She kept her composure and was able to score,” Therrell said.Therrell also commented on the excellent defensive play of co-captain and communications senior Lisa Lester.
“She stopped a lot coming down the center of the field,” she said. “She was an enforcer and ball-winner.”
The win moved the ‘Pack’s record to 6-7-1 with two home games left in the regular season.
Today, the team will take on GCAC rival William Carey at 5 p.m. at the ‘Fly.
“William Carey will be the first time that we had the whole team available to play,” Therrell said.
