Tired of second-class rappers?
Tired of rappers who are only about the money and not so much about the music?
Well then my friend, you have come to the right place. Jurassic 5’s second album entitled “Power in Numbers” is the best thing since hurricane Isidore.
For those of you not familiar with Jurassic 5, it is a hip-hop group out of Los Angeles that consists of four MCs and two DJs.
The MC section of the group consists of Chali 2na, who describes himself as a “verbal Herman Munster,” Zaakir, who has a voice and a style that makes you feel what he’s saying more than hear it, Akil, who brings an almost militant feel with his sense of rhythm and Marc 7, who brings a fresh and clean vibe to the heavy hitting grooves.
The two DJs are Cut Chemist, who spins beats that are as infectious and deadly as the West Nile virus, and Numark, who does everything from scratching, to playing a xylophone on the tracks.
While being relatively new to the scene, they provide a sound that is unique in its style.
Their rapping sounds like a group of old school rappers, but they also have singing on the album, a characteristic that makes them stand out among other popular rap acts.
On this album they continue to show their creativity through such tracks as “Remember his name” in which most of the rapping takes place in the form of phone conversations.
Jurassic 5 never fails to provide you with the kind of beats you want to play for the entire dorm to hear at three in the morning.
The bass is heavy and the lyrics are great.
The first single off the album is the eighth track, “What’s Golden,” the video for which has been playing on CTN in the Danna Center. Jurassic 5 is most likely to release “The Thin Line,” which features Nelly Furtado, as its second single.
The song is about the thin semi-permeable membrane that separates best friends from lovers.
Other than Furtado, there are relatively few artists featured on the album.
One of the privileged few is Big Daddy Kane and he only needs to spit a couple of verses before you realize that he has the gift of the golden tongue.
If you liked Jurassic 5’s last album, this one should be high on your list.
Also, if you like groups such as A Tribe Called Quest, Dilated Peoples and Outkast, then you might want to give this album a listen.
Jurassic 5, or J5, whichever you prefer to call it, will be at this year’s Voodoo Music Festival.
The live shows are even better than the albums.
Normally this part of the review is where the good tracks on the album are listed, but in actuality most of them were very good.
So you can fairly say that “Power In Numbers” deserves a Golden Seal of approval.
