According to a campus announcement posted Jan. 7, hoverboards and similar products are not allowed to be used, charged or stored on campus or in any campus building.
Robert Reed, assistant vice president for student affairs, said in the announcement that the policy took effect Jan. 4.
He cited safety hazards of hoverboards, such as the ability for them to catch on fire. Reed said the policy was developed after reviewing the Consumer Product Safety Commission’s statement and working with the university’s risk management department.
According to the policy, devices that fall under the policy include: “electronic skateboards, self-balancing boards/scooters, hands-free segways, hoverboards and any similar device.”
