Jon Altschul, associate professor of philosophy and chair of the university senate, died suddenly, according to a Friday morning announcement from the Rev. Kevin Wildes, S.J., university president.

The exact cause of death is not known, but Wildes’ email called it “sudden and tragic.”

“All who knew Jon remember his gentle laughter and a frequent twinkle in his eye. They also remember the care, thoughtfulness, generosity, intelligence and rigor with which he approached his research, led faculty meetings and taught classes. Jon was well respected by colleagues and students alike,” Wildes wrote.

A memorial will be held Monday, Feb. 29 in Roussel Hall at 4:30 p.m., and the noon mass in Ignatius chapel today will be offered in his honor.
