San Francisco first to require paid paternal leave

San Francisco became the first city to require businesses to provide full paid leave for new parents.

Approved uncontested by the Board of Supervisors, new mothers and fathers will receive six weeks of paid time off.

Supervisor Scott Wiener said, “The vast majority of workers in this country have little or no access to paid parental leave, and that needs to change.”

The measure also requires the mayor to sign it. Mayor Ed Lee has said he is happy to sign.
