Who says that metal braces, sweaty palms and menstrual cramps are all teenage girls have to look forward to during adolescence?
Teen pop-queen Taylor Swift’s lyrics in her latest album, “Fearless,” takes listeners through the awkward stages of adolescence where young women discover themselves, boys, and that love may not always be like a fairy-tale.
In “Fifteen,” Swift describes a 15-year-old girl who starts her freshman year of high school with the hopes that a smooth senior boy will notice her.
However, the girl knows she is not ready for a commitment which is why this song relates to most girls who have had hopeless crushes and unrequited love hurdles.
In another track, “White Horse,” a girl is in the stage of her life where she realizes that life isn’t a fairy tale and that she is not a princess stowed away in a castle, but instead, in a small town.
In this song, she has dreams of a future with her lover, but he disappoints her and she tells him that it is too late for him to come back with his white horse to rescue her.
This is the perfect song for the girl who got stood up for a date because it gives them hope that there is someone out there that will care and treat them like a princess should be treated.
Swift’s album appeals to young women struggling between the awkward stages of not being a girl, but not yet a woman.
With soft songs that evoke memories of teenage crushes and fairy-tale fantasies, Swift is line with the hearts of young girls all over, and thus will remain a force to be reckoned with in the pop world.
