Confederate monuments to come down in May
March 30, 2017
In just two months, the city of New Orleans plans to remove four Civil War-era Confederate monuments.
This comes after U.S. District Court Judge Carl Barbier and the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled in favor of the city to taking the confederate monuments down.
Even after the recent appeals court ruling, representatives from both sides of the issue, Take ‘Em Down NOLA and the Monumental Task Committee, are still at odds.
The question remains, should they stay or should they go?
Geary Mason, vice president of the Monumental Task Committee, answered that the monuments should remain.
“We’re trying to preserve the historic integrity of the city,” Mason said.
Michael ‘Quess’ Moore, one of the founding members of Take ‘Em Down NOLA is advocating for the confederate monuments’ immediate removal.
“Take down Robert E. Lee and all symbols of white supremacy,” Moore said.
Both the Monumental Task Committee and Take ‘Em Down NOLA are fighting for what they believe the city should do in this controversial issue. Three weeks ago, the 5th Circuit Court of Appeals ruled to remove the Robert E. Lee Monument in Lee Circle, the sculpture of General PGT Beauregard at the City Park Entrance, the statue of Confederate President Jefferson Davis that sits in Mid-City and the Liberty Place Monument at the foot of Iberville near Canal Street.
“When you have an ambiguous environment that sanctions and sponsors the devaluation of a group of people, by praising those who devalue them, then that itself is problematic,” Moore said.
Mason said that monuments like the Robert E. Lee statue in Lee Circle are part of history, and they don’t want them to be taken down.
“The city all of a sudden, because of a wave of political correctness or for whatever reason, thinks that certain monuments that have been up for a hundred years or more, should be taken down,” Mason said.
But Moore and Take ‘Em Down NOLA disagree, saying that history or not, they need to come down.
“For the same reason that you would never put up a statue of Hitler in Germany or any predominantly Jewish residing place. This is a predominately African-American city, has been for some time now, 60 plus percent, and there’s no reason we should have to ride around in the presence of psychological terrorism,” Moore said.
He said that there is so much history that is worthy of their praise.
“It’s really beneath us to celebrate genocide and murder,” Moore said.
But Mason and the Monumental Task Committee believe that we have to learn history, to prevent us from making the same mistakes we did in the past.
“The history is what it is, and like I said it’s sometimes painful, but it makes us who we are,” Mason said.
Mason is not convinced that the monuments will go through the removal process and be down in May.
“We think the monuments are going to stay up for another hundred years,” Mason said.
The Monumental Task Committee has a 3-point plan of what they would like to see happen instead of taking the monuments down. The first point is to practice tolerance and respect towards the monuments; the second is to get interpretive plaques near the confederate monuments to better explain them, and finally to build even more monuments in various locations around the city.
However, Mayor Landrieu is already collecting bids from contractors to remove the statues. And he plans to take them down this May.

May I please add my voice RE: the confederate statues?
I’ll bet every one of the writers & supporters of those horrible monuments CHEERED when the statuses of Saddam Hassein and his evil sons were torn down by the people of Iraq!
You don’t really want the black majority of our beautiful city to lose their patience and tear down the monuments dedicated to those murderous slavers & rapists!
Remember all those beautiful buildings in the French Quarters & the magnificent homes in the Garden District were all built by blacks AND WE HAVE NEVER BEEN PAID FOR IT!
Taking down those creeps is the least you should do!
It’s a start in the right direction

One of the world’s most violent cities, traumatized by 150 year old statues. Must be Dems.

It is obvious from the comments that Mr Moore is not verify well educated about history. There is really no possible way a memorial to Lee could be interpreted as a monument to racial supremacy. Considering how many minorities, especially around New Orleans, supported they confederacy three of the monuments can easily be seen as inclusive and unifying to all New Orleans citizens.
Remember, monuments are here to remind us of what happened, where we’ve been, who we are, and perhaps who we want to become.
Tearing down monuments on lyrics serves to divide people and spread ignorance.

The war between the states was not a war to end slavery. The South seceded from the Union because they were taking excess taxes on the Cotton grown here. Slavery only became an issue after Lincoln made it that way to gain support for the war. The people of the South fought for freedom of themselves the way the American colonists fought for freedom from Great Britain. Soon other monuments will be taken down such as those for the Vietnam War,Korean War or World War II. This is a beginning of Madness.

The attempts to remove these statues and the propaganda supporting it are the beginning of a socialistic, politically correct subculture intent on rewriting history and subjugating the beliefs of the mainstream majority into a brainwashed state of accepting their false history! It will not work, not as long as people like me who have studied history and know the TRUTH are still alive and have breath! When a group feels the need to obscure and ignore facts, the reason can only be to promote their own divisive and minority views on a populous that is unaware or unwilling to admit that their freedoms are that vulnerable to being abridged or taken away alltogether! Ignorance is not a crime but in this instance, ignorance is being used to facilitate a crime! This has happened many times in history; ancient Egypt, the Roman Empire, countless coups and takeovers; the fall of the USSR, the fall of IRAQ, and of course during the NAZI regime: the Third Reich, and during communist USSR. Any time when information is changed, abridged, censored or manipulated it is for someone’s ulterior motive! We need to ask ourselves if we want to let this continue! Once this precident is set others will follow and after each, it will be harder to go back to truth and freedom! Our autonomy as a true free democracy is at stake here! Please do not allow this hipocracy to continue!!!💢🗿💢Dio Vindici

We won’t let the” left” or “north” win again… you are starting another war that we will win. The south let the north have victory, you never would have beat us and Abe new that, only reason the proclamation was even introduced was to gain political gain in the north and re assure the “northerners” , who still at that point had never won a major battle against the south.. but Abe needed help with support so he made the proclamation. I have hand writin proof my family nor anyone in our area Ever owned or cared about “slaves”, we worked our land ourself…. there’s a new wave and generation coming and we are taking back our rights and privileges, you will never win! You will never erase or rewrite history! To be honest the north had more and worse conditions for “slaves” and YALL are the ones who did everything you say we did, but it’s not true and that fact is known, even if you try to hide these facts, we know and have proof otherwise… one last food for thought is that not only was the north more into slavery and deception, but the NORTH was the last to free there slaves, intact Ulysses S. Grant, the commander of the northern army second to only Lincoln himself, was the very last person in the “U.S.” to free his slaves!!! 2 years after the war!!! One day your hard work will be for nothing, for the south will rise again and fix this bs nation we live in . The exact nation of drugs and crime and political correctness we stood against more tHan 150 years ago.. see had we not GIVEN the north the victory, America today would still be / been the greatest nation on earth. We would not have immigrants flowing threw our borders raping killing and selling drugs, or her nations would not hate us as they do now.. in short americas issues today stem from the C. S. Of America not winning the war and letting the north have victory, due to weather , food etc… not to mention Robert E Lee was first asked by president Lincoln to be his commander and Lee said no, so yes from the very beginning Abe knew he had messed up by starting this “90 day campaign” one that in fact was a elligal invasion of the south, that lasted 4 years because us farmers with pitch forks were more than just that… Deo Vindice

It wasn’t until I read your post that I became quite sure that those statues need to be removed.

After all this time with the statues being there, where does the term “psychological terrorism” fit?? That is a pile of BS that a blind person could see! It is history… instead of rewriting it why don’t y’all try changing today and tomorrow… whether the statues are there or not isn’t going to change people’s behavior towards each other! If these statues are removed then perhaps someone should consider going after statues of Martin Luther King, Jr. What if someone felt oppressed by MLK’s beliefs and practices?? C’mon folks, grow up, be kind to each other, if you don’t believe that God made us all equal, then how about the Golden Rule? DO UNTO OTHERS AS YOU WOULD HAVE THEM DO UNTO YOU!!!

Stupid,so stupid. The moments have stood there for a long time and nobody batted and eye over them until someone whined and cried over them because the media told you to hate them. The people in this country these days make me sick. Bunch of pansies. So sad…

Comparing Lee, Davis, and Beauregard to Hitler? The spokesperson for the removal of the monuments is sadly misinformed on the Confederacy, and the total picture and cumulative reasons that resulted in the Civil War and its aftermath. It shows how political correctness seeks to manipulate thought processes and eliminate heritage for the ultimate purpose of obliterating our nation’s identity in order to then manipulate the future. Leftists and progressives have become masters at this fraudulent disinformation. The Landrieus and others promoting the removal of the monuments are classic examples of this dangerous ilk. Engage in a campaign of misinformation, destroy a nation’s heritage, obliterate its history and reason for being, and you will control its future.

Leave the monuments alone. They like cemeteries and other memorials were where they are long before people decided to live nearby. Therefore they shouldn’t have decided to live there in the first place. If the shoe was on the other foot, how would one feel?
The messengers of tolerance, coexistence & harmony should seek to understand why these are precious to those who hold them dear. Otherwise your beliefs & actions are hypocritical.

As a descendant of 1800 early New Orleans pioneers on the American side I do declare that taking down our monuments without the peoples vote is jihadist Isis and tyrant behavior from the cities council and Mayor. And it is all about hate whitey! The proof from their own mouths, “symbols of white supremacy,” Moore said. STOP this anyway you can.

It’s pretty simple……the rabid PC Left has gone off the rails on the Crazy Train! The American ISIS!!!
