The body of former Loyola University New Orleans adjunct professor Philippe Lannelongue has been recovered after a boating accident in Lake Pontchartrain, according to the St. Tammany Parish Coroner’s Office.
Lannelongue, 58, of Kenner, was identified Friday after Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries agents found his body near Manchac on Wednesday. He went missing on Aug. 31 when the sailboat he was aboard struck the Causeway Bridge, throwing him overboard, officials said.
A female passenger was rescued by the U.S. Coast Guard shortly after the crash.
Lannelongue previously taught in Loyola’s College of Business and the University of New Orleans as an adjunct professor. He also served at the University of Holy Cross, where he worked in the Department of Management and Marketing.
“He was such a sweet, funny and caring man,” said Sunny Bedford, junior marketing and film major. “You could tell, just from the way he spoke during his lectures, that he didn’t just care about what he was teaching but about the lives that he touched. He was so sweet to everybody. He had such a fun class to go into, and I was very excited for the year.”
The Tangipahoa Parish Coroner’s Office initially handled the recovery before transferring Lannelongue to St. Tammany Parish for an official cause of death determination.
The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries Enforcement Division is leading the investigation into the crash with assistance from the St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office and the U.S. Coast Guard.
It is not yet clear how Loyola will respond to the loss.
