The Wolfpack volleyball team kept to its winning ways, knocking off two foes in five days to remain at the top of National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics Region XIII.
In the home opener Friday, Loyola broke out to a 20-0 lead in the first game and won the match in straight games against Mississippi College, 30-10, 30-11, 30-15.
Elementary education senior Amanda Gilliard led the team with 12 kills. History senior Suzi Ruiz also had an outstanding game with 31 assists, 12 digs, and three aces.
On Tuesday night, the team traveled to Mobile to face Gulf Coast Athletic Conference rival Spring Hill, the second-ranked team in the region. They came through with the win in four games, 30-19, 25-30, 30-15, 33-31.
Gilliard once again led the team with 11 kills and eight digs. Shannon LaHaie, accounting junior, coming back from an ankle injury that kept her out for over a week, had 10 kills, 15 digs, and three blocks.
Ruiz and accounting sophomore Kelly Fridge also made significant contributions to Tuesday’s win. Fridge had 35 digs; Ruiz had 25 assists.
‘Pack head coach Tommy Harold said that he was generally pleased with the team’s performance in the past two games.
“We didn’t really get pushed (by Mississippi College),” he said. “It was nice to have a good, solid match in front of the home crowd.”
Commenting on Tuesday’s game, Harold said, “The team played well tonight. You’d like to see them win in three, but a win is still a win.”
After dropping their first three matches of the season, the Wolfpack have surged back to win eight of ten matches.
Following a week off, the team will travel to Jackson, Miss., to take on Belhaven next Friday at 7p.m.
