Foursquare is no longer just for the playground. It’s Loyola’s latest social networking application.
Loyola was selected to pilot the EDU version of Foursquare, a location-based social network that enables students, faculty, staff and alumni to connect and share information about what is going on at the university.
“Foursquare is a great venue to promote our programs and events,” said Heather Roundtree, director of Co-Curricular Programs. “It’s another way for our campus to be interconnected and engaging. Foursquare is just another way we have continued to keep the momentum towards incorporating social media outlets here on campus.”
Social networking becomes location based through Foursquare. Users gain points by checking in at their current location, discovering new places, sharing tips and then some, earning badges and maybe a shot at “mayor.” Mayors can receive discounts at the participating places where they reign supreme.
“I use Foursquare to let my friends know where I am outside of school. I think it will be pretty useless to let people know when I’m at school because that’s where I’m expected to be Monday through Friday. Who cares when I’m in business class?” said Devin Anderson, music business sophomore.
The application can be downloaded to smart phones and can be used campus wide at anytime of the day.
“I love it. But it seems time consuming. It takes away from valuable study and class time,” said Denise Chandler, political science senior.
