Brief: Terminally ill man is released from prison

Herman Wallace, a 71-year-old Louisiana State Penitentiary prisoner who has spent 41 years in solitary confinement, was released from prison on Tuesday, Oct. 1.

Wallace was taken to LSU Interim Hospital in New Orleans for his terminal liver cancer.

On Thursday, Oct. 17, the film “Herman House,” which documents Wallace’s life and his friendship with long-term pen pal Jackie Sumell, will be screened in Nunemaker Auditorium at 7 p.m.

The event will include an expert panel discussion about high incarceration rates in the U.S.

Tulane is also hosting an event about Wallace featuring a lecture by Sumell on Monday, Oct. 21, in the Kendall Cram Lecture Hall.

Wallace’s 1974 conviction in the death of a prison guard was overturned on Tuesday, Oct. 1.

The Associated Press contributed to this brief.
